Negresco Hotel: The Great Escape on the French Riviera

J.M. Towers

Aside from the luxury and history that fills it corridors and sumptuous suites, the Negresco owes its strong appeal to its vast art collection.

Located in Nice, on the Côte d’Azur, between Cannes and Monaco, the Negresco Hotel overlooks the famous English Bay. Its enormous size and white color create the illusion of a huge ship moored in an emblematic French location.

Negresco Hotel

The Negresco is much more than a luxurious 5-star hotel; it has become an exponent of French savoir-faire and sophistication. Opened on January 8, 1913, it was designed by Henri Negresco, hence its name. The building immediately attracted a brilliant clientele: international nobility, magnates such as the Vanderbilts, Queen Amélie of Portugal, the Great Dukes Vladimir and Dimitri of Russia and many other personages were among the earlier guests. Since then, diverse personalities have signed the guest book: Salvador Dali, Princess Grace of Monaco, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Marais, Greta Garbo, Louis Armstrong, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Elton John are among the celebrities who have enjoyed a stay on the French Riviera and experienced the Negresco myth.

Aside from the luxury and history of its halls, rooms, and lavish suites, the Negresco owes much of its appeal to its art collection, which includes more than 6,000 pieces featuring antiques and contemporary works spanning five centuries. Guests can admire Dalí‘s creations or the voluminous shape of Nike de Saint Phalle’s Nana in the Royal Lounge, a series of seven brightly colored rugs designed by Raymond Moretti, as well as other outstanding works of art.

The Versailles Room exhibits a portrait of Louis XIV, identical to the ones displayed in the Louvre Museum or the Palace of Versailles. This canvas of Hyacinthe Rigaud is one of the most beautiful pieces of the Negresco.

Each of the 96 rooms and 21 suites is decorated with exceptional period furnishings, inspired by the most remarkable periods of French art. Whether contemporary, baroque or classic, most accommodations have sea views or overlook the gardens. Adding to this unique joie de vivre, Chef Jean-Denis Rieubland’s cuisine is not to be missed. Choose one of Negresco’s three gastronomic spots according to your taste: Try the two-Michelin-starred Chantecler, the original Merry Go Round Brasserie, or the Piano Bar, where you can enjoy great cocktails and live music.
