The Cava & Hotel Mastinell is located at the heart of the Penedès wine region in Catalonia, Spain. The peculiar building was designed by the talented architects Josep Juanpere and Lluís Escamis, of the firm GCA Arquitectos Asociados.
The idea of placing a building–that imitates the way bottles are stacked, amid the vines, has come true with extraordinary success. The hotel was awarded the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Interior Design of Shanghai in 2011, as well as the award for Best Tourism Establishment in Spain’s Wine Routes in 2014, from the Spanish Association of Wine Cities (Acevin) and Turespaña. The spectacular design of this five star hotel with sinuous shapes follows the modernist spirit of Catalan architecture, with clear references to the master Antoni Gaudí.
The Mastinell hotel has twelve unique rooms with beautiful views, completely personalized and equipped with flat-screen HD TV with international channels, and all kinds of welcoming details like beauty products made from grapes. The main suite offers panoramic views of the vineyards and the nearby town of Vilafranca del Penedès. With 780 square feet, it has a large hot tub, three telephone lines and automatic curtains. The structure of the suite simulates two large champagne bottles resting— calm and connected—in a horizontal position. See here our world hotel selection. The hotel’s restaurant, En Rima, is led by the expert hand of Chef Jaume Ballad and presents the gastronomic tradition of the ancient Catalan and Mediterranean cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. The kitchen uses only natural products from the Slow Food international network, which focuses on the wealth of local varieties of seasonal products. To accompany the simple, healthy and very well executed dishes, you can sample any of the wines and champagnes from the Mastinell Winery with Penedès Appellation of origin.
The Mastinell wine and cava wellness therapies are based on the beneficial antioxidant properties of red and green grapes against the effects of aging, and their power to regenerate dead cells. The hotel’s beauty rituals with grapes are a pleasant and refreshing surprise for both body and soul.
Additionally, there is a wide range of cultural and recreational activities in the region of Penedès, from guided tours to the Mastinell wineries; wine, champagne and food pairing workshops; tours to tastings in other Penedès wineries, and visits to gastronomic events at the best restaurants in the area, all organized by the courteous hotel staff. ■
