There's a reason it's called "Superfast." The successor to the F12 Berlinetta is the fastest and most powerful Ferrari yet, and may even mark the end of an era for the Prancing Horse.
The mere description of the Ferrari 812 Superfast as the fastest and most powerful model in the car maker’s history was enough, unsurprisingly, to capture the attention of what felt like the entire planet. Over the course of its history, Ferrari has made some of the automotive industry’s best V12 engines, with high cylinder capacity and natural absorption. The new sports car is no exception to this tradition.
The Ferrari 812 Superfast carries this name for very good reasons. Now, let’s get into the details.
Ferrari’s latest two-door, two-seater has a 6.5L motor, 800hp, and 718nm of torque, making it capable of reaching 60mph in 2.9 seconds, and a maximum speed of 211mph. These figures cut close to some of Ferrari’s other models, like the hybrid LaFerrari, which reaches 60mph in three seconds, and has a top speed of 217mph.
What makes the 812 Superfast different, however, is its front-engine, rear-wheel drive — a unique feature from a car maker known for its central and rear engines. This twist is meant to aid in weight distribution, maximizing drive performance. As of 2018, it is the most powerful natural aspiration production car engine ever made.
Despite these differences, however, the lines of the hood, the roof, and the rear are reminiscent of its predecessor, the F12 Berlinetta, first released in 2012.
The main aesthetic differences between the Ferrari 812 Superfast and the F12 Berlinetta serve as functional differences as well. New aerodynamic passive and active elements are meant to stabilize the vehicle and improve driving experience. Air intakes on the front of the 812 Superfast activate different dynamic diffusers on the floor and in the tail of the car. A huge air vent can be found behind the front wheel arches, which added to a small air outlet on the rear fender complement the aerodynamic effect of the rear spoiler.
Transmission and traction.
An automatic double clutch and seven speed transmission allow the driver to manage the power of the engine. Despite electronic stability and steering system on all four wheels, in its most extreme driving mode, the 812 Superfast can still perform controlled skids. This same setting allows drivers to fully appreciate the sportiness of a true rear-wheel drive.
On the inside, the 812 Superfast feels more like a Ferrari you would find on a track than on a highway. Behind a multifunctional steering wheel, two huge screens bookend a bright yellow, large central lap counter. Like the F12 Berlinetta, passengers are also awarded an exclusive screen. Leather and metallic textures dominate the rest of the inside, with a sober and minimalist look and feel.
This is likely the last Ferrari to have a classic high cylinder engine. The Italian car maker has announced that future models will have hybrid engines — more efficient, but undoubtedly, no less powerful. The Ferrari 812 Superfast is indeed a special vehicle, as it pays homage to the engineering that has always made Ferrari great. ■
