Aston Martin Launches New Convertible

Behold the power of the new Vanquish Volante.

Last autumn Aston Martin launched its super class GT model, Vanquish. Not a year has passed and the British carmaker has already engineered a way to bring attention, class and exclusivity to an already exciting model. They’ve removed the metal top to give birth to a powerful convertible.

However, the Vanquish Volante (a nickname used to distinguish its brand’s convertibles) is not just a copy of its twin. Although they share the aesthetic line and spirit, this new model has undergone major mechanical and technical advances. The cabriolet is the first convertible of the British fleet whose bodywork is made completely from carbon fiber. This ultra light material significantly reduces the car’s total weight, allowing it to be more fuel-efficient, reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and improve performance.

It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (60 mph.) in just 4.1 seconds and reach top speeds of 295 km/h (183 mph). The Vanquish Volante reaches such velocity and acceleration thanks to a 5.9 liter V12 gasoline engine that develops a maximum output of 573 hp, connected to a six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic gearbox, the same as the coupé version.

Aston Martin choose canvas for the roof, a predilection of many purists who have harshly criticized the more recent trend towards metal roofs for convertibles. This shows the British brand’s commitment to the traditional canons. The three level cloth top is excellent for insulation and takes only 14 seconds to fold automatically, even when the car is moving at 50 km/h (30 mph).

This vehicle has enough interior space for four passengers, with a seating configuration of 2 + 2. The trunk has a capacity of 279 liters, 50% more than its predecessor, the DBS Volante.

We should also highlight the technologies used for driver assistance such as ADS, which allows the driver to choose between three different suspension modes, depending on his needs: Normal, Sport and Track. In each mode, the speed reaction and power performance of the motor also vary, so the ride will change considerably: it can be a quiet convertible for a leisurely stroll or a supercar of indomitable character ready for the circuit.

Aston Martin plans to have the Vanquish Volante ready for sale by the end of 2013 in the United Kingdom and Europe. It will cost 264,000 euros (about $348,823 at the current exchange rate). The price and date of arrival in the U.S. market has not yet been specified.
