Curls, curls, curls! As more men and women opt to wear their naturally curly hair, new products have been developed to help style, hydrate and improve the health of all types of curls. In this review by azureazure, we will delve into the top 5 curly hair products and suggest why they should be added to your haircare routine.
- Bumble & Bumble Curl Custom Conditioner
Bumble & Bumble’s BB Curl three-in-one conditioner is an all-in-one beauty product that caters to all different types of curly hair with its conditioner, co-wash and leave-in formula. According, to Bumble & Bumble’s website, this product, which has a thick and creamy consistency, feels more like a pudding than a conditioner, and can be diluted for finer curls if necessary.
For $34, this product can be used for washing, styling and hydrating curly hair. With someone who has curly hair of my own my only concern regarding this product is that it might promise too much for its price point. I have personally used three-in-one or two-in-one curly hair products before and it would not fully deliver on all of its promises.
Another thing I find interesting about this particular product is that its original consistency is that of a pudding, but can be diluted for finer curls. This is super important because the heavier a product feels on the hair the more it can weigh it down or make curls more oily or lose their shape. With curly hair products its all about finding the right consistency and balance for you. I would definitely be interested in seeing how this product can be diluted. Would you need to add water to it to dilute? What is that process like? And at that point how much product are you wasting as a result of diluting it?
- Curls Cashmere + Caviar Hair Silk
As this product’s name suggests, Curls Cashmere + Caviar Hair Silk aims to leave your curls luscious and silky with its leave in conditioner and detangling formula. Cashmere and caviar extracts aim to hydrate and strengthen curly hair, while loosening up the curls to help detangle hair for an overall easier styling process. For $15, this hair care product could be used as a base for any style, while working to keep hair soft and silky throughout the day. What I found interesting about this product is that it promises to leave your hair luscious and silky, however, as many people with curly hair know there are different textures of curly hair, some are silkier and more fine whereas other types of curly hair are more coarse and have tighter curls. Personally my curls are tight and coarse so to have a product promise to leave my hair soft and silky would definitely be interesting to see. I think that it might help detangle my curls but I am unsure as to whether or not it could change the texture. For more information about this product click here.
- Form Beauty Multitask Leave-in Lotion
Form’s Beauty Multitask Leave-in Lotion and conditioner has created a formula that aims to leave your hair hydrated, while keeping your curls bouncy and full of life. The lightweight formula, according to the product’s website, is made with coconut oil, shea butter and argan oil that help packs your strands with hydration and elasticity. This $32 multi-use product can be used as a detangler, a daily refresher, or a simple moisturizer, making it applicable for styling and hydrating curly hair. What I like the most about this product is that it uses natural oils such as coconut oil, argan oil and shea butter. These oils are typically great for hydration when it comes to curly hair, however, what I find the most interesting about this product is that it claims to have a lightweight formula. However, what if someone needs more hold with their products or its too lightweight that it doesn’t hold the style you want? To me this product sounds like something you can incorporate into your daily hair care routine but needs to be layered with another product when styling curly hair.
- Oribe Curl Gloss Hydration & Hold
Described as a lightweight gel that feels like a serum, Oribe’s Curl Gloss Hydration & Hold aims to create soft, frizz-free definition with zero greasy side effects, according to its website. For $42, this product comes packed with Brazilian ingredients like jicama, cupuacu, Brazil nut, and passionflower. As a result, when used in your daily hair care routine it lends to creating tightly defined curls that work against humidity and heat by helping to eliminate frizz. To help further define your curls you can layer this product under a gel or mousse for all-day hold. The first thing that caught my eye with this product is that it works to fight frizz, the ultimate nemesis of curly hair. Another thing that stood out to me when reviewing this product is that it claims to have zero greasy side effects. This is very important when styling curly hair since greasy or oily products can weigh curly hair down even more and typically feels unpleasant to have in your hair. Also, I like how this product can be layered with a gel or mousse to ensure all-day hold, which typically other products have a problem delivering. Most curly hair products are used in layers to help achieve your desired look so it makes sense to use it with a gel or mousse.
- Sebastian Professional Twisted Elastic Cleanser and Detangler
Winner of the 2018 Best of Beauty Award by Allure, Sebastian’s Professional Twisted Elastic Cleanser and Detangler is similar to a seaweed wrap for your curls, the elastic polymers and marine extracts in Sebastian Professional shampoo and detangling conditioner spiral around each strand, adding renewed body and shape, helping curls to stay hydrated and defined all-day. For $42, this shampoo and conditioner combo can be used for styling, washing and hydrating curls. For this product I definitely think it might help to hydrate your curls, but like the other products above I would be cautious is saying that it would help renew or change the body and shape of your curls. Curly hair tends to be pretty finicky in regards to styling and tends to have a mind of its own when it dries. Another thing to look out for is the ingredients used in the shampoo since certain chemicals can dry out curly hair. On the flip-side conditioner is always welcomed with curly hair, especially hydrating ones. ■
