Koenigsegg Agera: Spirit of The Ghost

By Ivan Luque

Founded in 1994 by Christian von Koenigsegg, the super luxury car maker Koenigsegg, decided to use as headquarters the military base that was home to the “Ghost Squadron”, now retired. The Ghost Squadron became a Swedish national symbol in the 1940s. People would hear a distant roar in the sky, but never see a thing. The cognomen given to them was the ghost-fighters. The brand was asked to keep the spirit of the ghost alive. That is why each Agera vehicle has the insignia of a ghost.

The Koenigsegg brand aims to implement modern advances in aerodynamics and contemporary aesthetics in every model. Over 17 years of computational fluid dynamics and real wind tunnel testing, have evolved the original Koenigsegg Competition Coupe into the Koenigsegg Agera R.

The 2012 Agera R is a hypercar:  highly efficient and made of ultra-light alloys and with an environmentally friendly drive train. The twin-turbocharged 5.0 liter V8 engine only weighs 434 pounds and can deliver 960 hp on gasoline and 1,140 hp when using E85 fuel.  In 21.19 seconds the Agera R can reach 300 km/h and come to a complete stop–this is a new Guinness World Record.

The Agera R has two Dihedral Synchrohelix doors that open with minimal swing and offer a more spacious entrance. In 10 minutes a Thule roof can be adjoined to the Agera R. It is a super-lightweight roof box made from carbon fiber–tested for safety at speeds of up to 300 km/h.
